What experience do I need to be a successful typing contractor?
We do require contractors to either have previous transcription experience OR extensive WP experience across a number of disciplines.
Experience required depends on the type of transcription you are wishing to undertake and is outlined below:
Medical Transcription
We prefer typists to have at least five (5) years of experience across a number of medical specialities. Within the medical field, there are many people for whom English is a second language, so the ability to interpret accented English is very highly regarded.
Finance Transcription
To be successful as a specialist finance transcriptionist you need to be very familiar with the international language of finance. You will therefore understand terms like CAGR, ROI, REIT, CapEx and OpEx. Whilst these terms are international they are also used by many people for whom English is a second language: so the ability to interpret accented English is very highly regarded.
Successful finance transcriptionists need not necessarily be native English speakers themselves, however, they do need to understand the use of grammar to ensure that the transcripts created accurately reflect the flow of the conversation being transcribed. We are currently creating transcripts of financial events for companies based in the following locations (among others): Australia, United Kingdom, France, Germany, India, Korea, Taiwan, China, Singapore, New Zealand, Japan, Brazil, Spain.
have previous audio transcription experience;
have knowledge of finance terminology gained through work experience or study in a related area, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge; and
demonstrate good research skills.
General Transcription
You need to be able to type interviews and focus groups for academic and market research, as well as some legal transcription (e.g. police records of interview). Other important areas of work undertaken by general transcriptionists include the transcription of media conferences and financial briefings.
Preference will be given to typists who:
have previous audio transcription experience;
have experience transcribing media briefings (e.g. press conferences) and/or finance briefings (e.g. AGMs, investor presentations etc);
have knowledge of finance terminology gained through work experience or study in a related area, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge; and
have the ability to understand and transcribe a range of accents, particularly Asian accents.
Minute Taking
Sterling Transcription also requires the services of professional Minute Takers to produce succinct and accurate minutes of a broad range of meetings from audio recordings. Meeting types include Board and committee meetings, management team meetings, AGMs, and other events. Minute taking provides an exciting opportunity for contractors to engage with a broad range of businesses across diverse sectors.
The main requirements for this role are highly developed listening, critical thinking and written communication skills, especially the ability to briefly summarise key discussion points. A high standard of proficiency in Microsoft Word is also required, coupled with meticulous attention to detail and an established record of working with and adhering to confidentiality obligations.
Previous minute taking experience will be highly regarded. We strongly encourage contractors who are running their own EA/PA service to apply.
